with Eduard photo-etched detail set

Revell re-released the Monogram F-105D in 2000 in the UK for a bargain £10. The basic kit is quite detailed, but I decided to add an Eduard photo-etch set and rescribe the raised panel lines. The detail set is quite comprehensive and includes new cockpit components, intake splitter plates, jet exhaust, antennae and other assorted bits-and-bobs. The kit nose is, to my eyes, too pointed — the real aircraft has a curved nose whereas that in the kit is straight, but I didn’t modify it. I replaced the nose pitot with brass tube and wire, and sanded of the reinforcing plates which were features of later D-models. The model was painted with Humbrol enamels, and I think I grabbed the wrong tin for the undersides — it’s not quite the right shade. I used the kit decals, and they were not great being out-of-register and resistant to decal solvents. The main problem with this model is the undercarriage. I tried to get the Aeroclub metal replacement, but could not find a set. To make matters worse, the axle on one leg snapped off. I’ve replaced it with wire, but to no avail: both main wheels cant inwards at a nasty angle.

Your example sets a standard for me to emulate. Question: How many years experience with air brushing do you have? Any suggestions for the kit brand (1/72) for any of the F-105 series. Same question for the F-4E.

Hi there, thanks for your comment! I think I’ve been airbrushing since around 1992, when I was about 14. I’m not sure I’m any better at it now than I was back then! I used a Badger 200 for about 15 years, and it was a great airbrush.
I’m afraid I don’t have any recommendations in 1/72 as I have not built a kit in that scale since before 1994.
