Airfix 1/48 British Aerospace (Blackburn) Buccaneer S.2B

12 Squadron, Royal Air Force, Bahrain 1991

This is the oldest model in my collection, the Airfix Buccaneer S.2B. It was built in the Autumn of 1994 and was inspired by an article in Scale Models International by Jonathan Mock. It’s almost entirely straight from the box, the only additions being some wire in the wing folds and for the pitot tubes. The decals are those that came with the kit. This model was groundbreaking for me in that I used an oil wash (directly over a custom-mixed acrylic pinky colour) and drybrushed some of the rivets. I forgot to add noseweight, and so it needs propping up to keep the nosewheel on the ground. This is a much-maligned kit. It did have warped fuselage halves, but with patience, and plently of clamping and tape, it will go together very well. At the time I was pretty proud of it, but now it looks very ropey alongside many of my subsequent models and stands as a marker of where this present collection began. I have built an S.2 here to a better standard, done in Royal Navy colours with Eduard photo-etch details and resin seats.
